My fiance ordered me this guitar for Christmas. I had watched the videos and read some reviews but was expecting little more than a novelty instrument - mostly decoration - until I actually played it.
It plays well and sounds great, especially for the price. I will have no problem breaking this out on stage and expect it to become an important part of my musical arsenal.
Recieved my Boho Motor Oil a few days ago. You guys did a great job! Works great with my amps but I really like plugging into the PigNose / turning up the volume and getting "Crunchy". Thanks.
Exactly as agreed
Great little axe, with lots of attitude. It is the perfect addition to my collection of eclectic (and electric) guitars.
This guitar has a tone far better than you'd expect to come out of it, and it's also well-built and visually striking. In this price range, you'd be hard-pressed to find anything that compares in terms of overall quality, in my opinion.
I received the guitar as schedule the shipping process was top notch.
I received my guitar in great shape physically, but my only recommendation is to have the guitar set up by a pro. It is ok for a beginner but fret board was so so just needed some rework. I honestly set mine up to just be a slide guitar, and with the can sound in the back ground it has turned out to be great.
do you ship to the UK and is it expensive to do so?? or do you have a UK based retailer??
Had to order one of these after swinging by your booth at Music Midtown. Can't get over how bright and rich the tone is!
Real fun to play with a great sound everybody shines with excitement.the first time they see it I love it
This is a beautiful creation you guys! And it has a good sound!
I found the idea interesting and decided to buy one to check it out as I have some Fender guitars. It is still an interesting idea, however I don't believe it replaces a regular guitar. For the price paid, you can buy a reasonable entry level model from Fender/Gibson or even buy a good second hand guitar. I will not return the one a bought as it is a good piece of decoration in my living room.
Having built guitars for 20 years, I'm impressed with the quality of the parts that are on this guitar for the price. The truss rod needed a little adjusting along with the bridge, and I now have a very playable low action. The tonal options with the 2 humbuckers is better than I anticipated through my Fender twin. Nicely done!
The guitar plays well and sounds very good. But I feel the workmanship could be just a little better. The steel plate at the bottom of the canyon and sharp edges which I filed down and most of the components were loose and had to be tightened. The pin plug should have a plastic washer between it and the steel can so you don't get a shock when playing the guitar. It's a unique idea for a guitar. When people see if they get a kick out of it.
I don't see any strap buttons, are they available ?
Excellent experience buying from Bohemian! Arrived in great condition, descent setup, volume and tone react nicely. Looking forward to unlocking tunes inside this stunning guitar!
Mine came out of the box with an obvious dent on the front-top corner. Although I would have been very dissapointed with a dented $5000 guitar, it didn't matter so much to me on this motor-oil-cannister-guitar contraption. Actually, I'm planning on denting it a little more, add some more scuffs and scratches, and possibly some actual motor oil stains. That's the spirit, right?
As an instrument, it's about what you would expect from a $300 instrument. The components aren't those of a $5000 guitar, but then again, if that's what your looking for, get yourself a PRS. The action is a little high. I'll let it sit for a few days and see if I can fiddle with the truss rod and set it up to my personal taste. That doesn't worry me at all.
About sound: It's an electric guitar. Plain and simple. I was expecting some kind of metal can resonance, but it sounds just like any regular humbucker mounted guitar. I wasn't playing at very high volume, if I did, maybe it would have been different. I tried playing METAL at high gain and suprisingly, it's a proper metal instrument (although the looks might lean towards blue grass). Feedback or unusual artifacts from the canister did not occur.
Comfort: That's the most awkward part. If you play in a sitting position, without a strap, it doesn't lay well on your lap, like a strat would. The thickness of the body also tends to make you pull it against you with your right arm, pushing the neck straight ahead of you. I guess having a beer belly doesn't help... It makes me play in a position where I lean forward and hold the guitar as if I was pointing a machine gun at someone. Playing in a standing position, with a strap, is much more natural. And I feel like my right arms rests better.
Stand: It is said that you don't need a stand as the instrument stands by itself. That is true. But be aware that all the weight of the neck is on front of the canister, and the slightest bump will tilt it face down. Even if you bump it backwards, it wil...
First awesomely cool. Some minor QC issues I fixed. Don't like the tape filled pot holes for the right hand set up. I'm putting in some chrome cap bolts.still overall good value. Im thinking of getting the other 3
I purchased the Boho Motor Oil (Red) double Humbucker model w/HSC. The neck is fantastic! It is a little bit wider than most electric guitar necks (very similar to an acoustic guitar) but still plays easily and painlessly smooth. The fret edges could have been filed a little smoother for my liking. The tone control is very responsive and when rolled off can give the guitar a hollow body flattop type of sound and then by bringing in some highs with the tone control, you can dial in a classic southern rock sound. There is also an opportunity to dial in a slightly over-driven bluesy sound and a clean country picking sound, all in one visually stunning instrument. This is not just a conversation piece, but a real player.
I just rec'd my Boho Series Motor Oil (RED) 2 Humbucking Guitar with TKL hardshell case today. They are both built solidly and their appearance are awesome. The neck is wide, similar to one found on an acoustic guitar however the action intonation are spot on and it plays well. The fret edges are a bit sharp, for my liking, and I will be filing them down a bit to smooth the sharp edges (something that you expect with a guitar in this price range). The volume and tone knobs are very responsive and allow you to dial in a lot of tonal possibilities. I was even able to get a nice acoustic hollow body guitar sound with highs backed off. The brights are bright and clear and can also be overdriven to get a nice bluesy and classic/southern rock sound. I think this guitar will not only be a looker/conversation piece but will also be an integral part of my guitar collection and performing gear.
I've been playing guitar for a long time. (I'm 64) I've owned a lot of instruments and played many more. I was looking for something new and stumbled onto the BOHO site one night. I had seen one of these right after Paul Simon's Graceland album came out and was intrigued by them back then so the whole idea of an "Oil Can Guitar" had been in my head for a good long time. I figured I could always send it back if it didn't play well or sounded lousy. My Motoroil arrived within two weeks from time of order and I have not entertained the idea of sending it back even once! It was setup perfectly and sounds just fantastic! (I run it through a Fender Blues Junior) I haven't had my Telecaster out of it's case in over a month. I play in a "Geezer Rock" band here in The Villages, FL and the guitar has been a hit with everybody. I find it really playable and comfortable... I have mostly played acoustic guitars and the extra width of the oil can is familiar for me. I put a couple of strap locks on it and have been very happy with my newest guitar since I got it! I have no problem recommending this guitar, it is a quality instrument that sounds and plays wonderfully! If you're looking for something different BOHO is the way to go!
Sounds and play great! What a piece to trigger conversations! Love it!
The Motor Oil has great tone and sustain! It is a can and sits a little further out from your body, but that's the point, right? i got the hardshell case also and the handle on the case is positioned off center and it doesn't balance well when you pick it up by the handle.
Can not believe the sound of the Boho Motor Oil. You guys have a great thing going . Phenomenal...
I love this guitar! It looks and sound incredibly. It was delivered within 2 weeks which I thought was really good, because I live in The Netherlands. Also customer service was a great help when I had a little problem with the backpanel. Please keep on making these incredible guitars!!
Love this guitar. Superior customer service when I originally had an issue with the truss rod adjustment. They talked this beginner through it. A lot of playing the guitar, and it's a conversation piece. Thank you so much!
I was surprised by two things after I pulled the guitar out of the box. First, I thought it was a made in USA product, but it's not - China. Second, it sounds pretty good through my Mesa/Boogie Mk 5. The problem is the size of the body (oil can) makes it awkward to play. I would recommend cutting the size of the can to allow it to lay closer to the body.
So, what I have is a nice piece of guitar art that can stand on its own in my studio and can be played for fun.
I love this guitar! I've had so much fun playing it, tinkering to get the exact sound I want, and of course showing it off! Only problem is my friends can't keep their hands of it (not kidding). It's not only a beautiful guitar, but it sounds beautiful too. A++
Christmas time is a hard time to order something like this. It took a while and I would have liked a couple update emails, but it was well worth it! It was well packaged and looked awsome when it arived!
Thanks to you all!!
LOVE LOVE LOVEEEEEEEE my new guitar! Sounds incredible and I get stopped everywhere I go with it.
For a while now, I was in search of something different, and not sure just what... lo and behold a Boho Motor Oil guitar ended up in my collection. First off, this guitar just LOOKS GREAT; the mix of color tones and design keep me wanting to stare at it for hours. The Boho emblem installed in the headstock is yet another perfect example of the quality, detail, and craftsmanship put into this guitar. And this guitar PLAYS GREAT too!! The neck is very comfortable and playable; low action, intonation accuracy, and stays in tune really well. What really surprised me was how well balanced the guitar is, not neck-heavy at all. With the body being a little thicker than my acoustic, it was easy getting used to. The tone is great too, whether playing clean, over-driven, slide or fingerpicking. I am more than happy with my Boho guitar. It will be on my next record.
